Our second update of the month has a change from the published schedule in the QUAD programme. Three very different worlds cuddle up together on the Fringes this quarter, from the farthest reaches of space to small town America.
First up, in a change to the published programme, we have the adult animated classic Heavy Metal!
Heavy Metal (15) – Friday 22nd July at 8:40pm
Canada 1981 86 mins Dir: Gerald Potterton
Based on the US magazine Heavy Metal and the French magazine Metal Hurlant, this film is a sweeping story of the battle between good and evil played out through a series of short animated films about a glowing green orb, the Loc-Nar – the personification of ultimate evil. Definitely not for kids, sex, violence and rock and roll are the order of the day! Heavy Metal magazine has just relaunched under the stewardship of Grant Morrison, so what better time to reacquaint yourself (or indeed see for the first time) with the sci-fi and fantasy romp.
Continuing with a music theme we celebrate the 28th birthday of Moonwalker with a screening and a party night in the cafe!
Moonwalker (PG) + DJ Night in the Café Bar
Friday 30th September at 8:00pm
USA 1988 93 mins
Dir: Jerry Kramer, Jim Blashfield & Colin Chilvers
Made just after the release of the 1987 BAD album, Michael Jackson was at the peak of his critical and commercial success. This fantasy tale of good-versus-evil features the iconic video to Smooth Criminal, Leave Me Alone and Speed Demon alongside some live concert footage that showcases one of the great stage performers in his prime. To be experienced on the big screen for sure! Join us in the QUAD Café bar afterwards where we will be spinning as many Michael Jackson classics as we can fit in one night!
And back in the 1980s once again for this quarter’s Crossing The Streams offering and we go with a summer classic celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary this year.
Stand By Me (15) – Friday 12th August at 8:30pm
USA 1986 89 mins Dir: Rob Reiner
In a small Oregon town, a group of friends – sensitive Gordie (Wil Wheaton), tough guy Chris (River Phoenix), flamboyant Teddy (Corey Feldman) and scaredy cat Vern (Jerry O’Connell) – are in search of a missing teenager’s body. Wanting to be heroes in their hometown’s eyes, they set out on an unforgettable two day trek that turns into an odyssey of self-discovery. One of the great coming of age tales now hits 30! Based on the Stephen King short story from the book Different Seasons (which also contributed the story The Shawshank Redemption was based on).
Tickets will be on sale soon…..
