SATORI SUMMER

The sun might be coming out but here at The Fringes we will not let that distract us from our task of bringing you the best from the weird and wonderful outer reaches of cinema! Here’s what our Asian movie night Satori Screen will be bringing to QUAD – Derby over the next 3 months…

THE MERMAID (15)

China 2016 94m Dir: Stephen Chow

Friday July 15th at 8:55pm.

When business tycoon Liu Xuan buys the Green Gulf with the intention of reclaiming some of the land from the sea, the technology used causes the marine life to die. The surviving merpeople send one of their own, Shan, disguised as a human, to assassinate Liu Xuan. The assassination doesn’t go to plan when Shan develops feelings for her target. Breezy slapstick comedy combines with stunning visuals to give Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) a huge hit in this new fantasy drama that is already the sixth highest grossing film of the year!

“The Mermaid will make you laugh. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like subtitles. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never heard of the director. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen a Chinese movie in your life. It will make you laugh. Guaranteed.” – Simon Abrams

THE HOST (15)

South Korea 2006 119m Dir: Bong Joon-ho

Friday August 19th at 8:45pm.

The Park family live a peaceful and unremarkable life selling snacks from a stand on the bank of Seoul’s Han River. Dad of the family Gang-du is a lazy and childish man who spends his days doing as little work as possible. When a mutated monster, the result of the US military dumping chemicals in the river, snatches up his daughter Hyuen-Seo he must find the bravery and resolve to get her back. A fantastically thrilling creature feature from acclaimed director Bong Joon-Ho (Snowpiercer, Memories Of Murder) which combines a wicked streak of black humour with one of the 21st century cinema’s most memorable monsters.

“You’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, you’ll jump, you’ll ask Hollywood for your money back. Seek it out.” – Empire Magazine
